We can omit the agenda topic points of the Handbook and the Website/Facebook -- nothing to discuss unless someone has issues to raise.

| I received approval from IDPR to apply grant funds to the purchase of a spool gun. We will be able to vote on that.

| As a welder, maybe I can provide some input... what are the plans for the machine? Repair jobs, fabrication, types of metal?

We received grant funding for chain saw and brush trimmer racks for the trailer and also 4 chain saw racks for motorcycles.
You may have an opportunity to make a contribution of your skills, David.

| A spool gun is the more traditional type of mig welding, where rather than run the wire feed through a tube from the control box, the gun itself holds a spool of wire and just has a power cord to the box. Spool gun have advantages and disadvantages. They can run thicker and softer wire more easily, like aluminium, and let you run longer distances from the box than is not possible with other units. They are a more industrial, flexible type of mig welding. Disadvantages are they are heavy to hold after a while, more expensive to purchase, have to have wire changed more frequently, amoung others. Honestly, I don't know all the applications that are planned for pantra, but I would be inclined not to use a spool gun for such light, easy duty.

| No Jungle Pizza. No move on the horizon unless someone wants it and locates a new spot that gets the votes.

Larry, does the club have a power source? The spool gun is of no use without a power source. Have you thought about a convertible 120/240 (suitcase) machine? They're self contained, can run gas with hard wire, or flux core wire with no gas, and can be powered remotely by any 4kW or larger rv generator w/ 120/240vac. Drawback is that any small welding machine will only have a 20-40% duty cycle. They're not designed for production welding. David and I can pool our ideas for any help you need. Even though I ride a desk these days, I too have 35 years of industrial welding (http://www.gfmfg.com), and would be glad to help when I can. Let me know, and I can talk to my suppliers about discounts.
I know Rick and many others in the club have great welding skills also .

Bo set up the plan. He has the power head available. You two and David should get together and figure out the best option for PANTRA.
We have a budget of $600 that is grant reimbursible at 80%. IDPR wants us to own the machine when we are done, so we can spend what we need to get what we want within the limits of what the members are willing to approve.

Suitcase welders are cute, but at $600 its not gonna happen. Even highend rigs are unimpressivee. Maybe a little millermatic, and a cyclinder is gonna eat up quite a bit of budget too. I assume we are going to want to weld aluminium for saw racks, otherwise I would try to get way with just flux core.
If we could get our hands on say, $1000 then I would feel a bit more comfortable about being able to get a solid acdc setup.
Craig, I will bring the laptop and come a bit early if we want to explore options so we have something to present during the meeting...Last edited on Wed Mar 10th, 2010 03:50 am by David P

I was just reminded that I promised to test ride an R6 at 6PM for Cody, before he plunks down 6 grand. Have to go from Post Falls at 5:30 to Vista and Trent, then back to Post Falls for the meeting. I'll get back there as soon as I can.
David, I agree 100%, the budget will detrmine what scale of machine is realistic, but if Bo has a base power source, maybe all that's needed is a feeder??
