Hi everyone, I am the new contact for Andy Boggs and the CDA NF. I have been tasked with coming up with ideas for things to be included in our CSA for this year. I also would like ideas and or history on the $35,000 (not sure if this dollar amount is correct) grant the Forest Service was awarded but hasn't moved on yet.

Please help come up with ideas. So far we will include cleaning waterbars on Chilco Mtn trail, and working with Andy on a possible reroute. I have also heard some ideas for reworking portions of Tr. 78 (Nicholas Cr.) which for those of you who don't know is opposite side of the ridge from Hells Canyon.

I look forward to hearing your ideas.:)

Mike,

So Andy Boggs is asking PANTRA to clear water bars on the Chilco Mtn Trail that he's proposing be closed to motorized use?

Yes, and we decided at the meeting, we would do it as a continuing "Act of Good Faith." Besides we aren't going to let them close it anyway. At least not until we have an acceptable re-route or alternative trail. Heck, they might not even have the draft EA out before the end of the summer. :D

Here's another idea. What about doing some tread work on Tr. 14A. There's a possible grant opportunity. Come on people, I need some ideas here.:P

1.  Trail from McGee Ranger Station up to McGee Peak - needs re-routing in places where it's digging out roots.

2.  Hunters Trail - needs lots of re-routing to avoid digging out roots.

3.  Buckles - the lower portion needs re-routing - it's two big ruts that have become creek beds.

4.  Declaration - much of the lower portion needs water bars.

5.  The whole length of Independence Ck Tr needs signs, every 1/2 mile saying something like "CAUTION - foot and horse traffic - motorized users exercise EXTREME caution."

6.  Major trailheads, e.g., bottom of Hell's Canyon, Weber Saddle, need big signs with a big map (clearly indicating which trails are for which users), holder for smaller paper/brochure maps, and a place for PANTRA to say how we maintain the trails & contact information.

7.  Barney Creek - needs to have barriers put in to prevent ATVs from continuing to use it.

Thanks for the project ideas Joe.  I'm meeting with Andy today to finalize our CSA for 2008 so I'll post what we come up with.

It's only a $500 CSA and Canfield Cleanup usually amounts to about $300 of it so we'll see what other project would amount to the balance.

The other projects sound like great proposals for IDP&R Motorbike Fund Grants.

I met with Andy this morning and in addition to the Canfield Cleanup, we will be doing some work on the Barney Creek.  The FS already has to block ATV Access & eliminate renegade ATV penetration there so we will determine how we can facilitate that work as part of our CSA.

I'll post the other 2008 Trail Maintenance Plans he gave me a list of tomorrow.

Larry, I assume many of these are still valid as areas we could submit which still need further trail work? (Not long ago you mentioned we needed ideas of trails that need work ...)

We are still waiting for the Coeur d' Alene Ranger District to issue the MVUM ( Motor Vehicle Use Map) but I am sure that Hunter's and Buckles were declared user created trails.  I don't know if that means they are out-of-bounds for non-motorized users also, but they are closed to motorized for sure.  I heard Independence and Declaration received some tread work last year so some of those issues may have been resolved.

Signs at the trailheads would be a good project for PANTRA to undertake.  We can initiate a discussion with Andy Boggs to see if they would allow it.

I have heard that Chilco has been closed to to motorized use.  Can you please check for me?  As for clearing water bars on a trail that is to be closed to motorized use I can not understand why PANTRA would maintain a trail that is not for trail riding.  If the forrest service wiil leave the trail open I will donate several days worth of work on the trail.  I do not understand why PANTRA is donating time and money to maintain trails that are closed to use.  Do understand kissing the FS's butt ,but the FS has been stabbing our sport in the back for the last few years closing trails that I and every other rider has helped fund in the past.

Do you have a dollar figure that has been spent from registration and fuel taxes on Chilco mountain in the recent decade?  I am just curious as to how much money was spent-lost to a trail that will not be available.   Sorry to rant it is just a passionate subject to me.

Thank you

good faith and forest service are two words that dont belong in the same sentence. i think Andy Boggs would just love it if we helped him dismantle Chilco. The forest sevice did not ask us to help maintain or re-route Chilco so it could remain open. they closed it, told us what the fine is for getting caught on it. i dont see any good faith there
